The benefits of stand-up paddle (sup)

In addition to being very accessible, stand-up paddle (SUP) has many benefits for both body and mind. It is a real source of well-being and pleasure to share on the water.

The nice thing about up stand-up paddle boarding is that you're doing physical activity without even realising it. And at the same time, the mind gets a break from the daily grind thanks to a new and stimulating environment, a unique view of the passing landscapes and the pleasure of sharing these nautical experiences.

Toning your muscles: keeping in shape whilst getting enjoyment out of it

Paddling whilst standing on the board, even if you are going slowly, works the cardiovascular system and many muscles as well:
- the legs which provide stability (proprioception),
- the abdominal muscles which convey paddle force to the board
- the upper body (shoulders, arms, dorsals) which are involved in paddling movements.

If you use an inflatable SUP, using a pump for a few minutes beforehand to achieve good inflation pressure is also a good way of warming up before getting on the board.

Head out for an adventure: with everything being different on the water

Moving on the water in an unknown environment is like setting off on an adventure close to home, rediscovering the earth as viewed from the water, going somewhere you have never been before. Without necessarily going too far from the bank, it is easy to access very calm places in the midst of nature.

This sensation of freedom and discovery is exhilarating and it is really easy to put everyday worries and concerns to one side for a bit. A word of warning, though, you’ll want to get back out on the water as soon as possible!

Have fun with family: the easy way to share water sport

With just one stand up paddle, it’s easy to have fun as a family. There is nothing easier than paddling with the children sitting on the front for a short trip on the water. And you’ll see that it won’t be long before they want try and stand up as well and to paddle like you. And whatever happens, you can be sure they will use your board as a floating pontoon to dive from time and and time again!

And if you have a second board, you can enjoy getting away from it all as a couple on the water, out there where everything is calm and peaceful.

Start a new sport: doing it to your heart's content all year round

Your hesitant initial experiences are behind you and you have decided to take up SUP seriously? Perfect, you can head out for longer and longer trips along the coast, on a lake or on a river if you load up your board with water-tight bags.
Or you could start taking part in local races with a long, pointed board.
Or perhaps throw yourself into the waves with a supsurf board.
Or all three maybe, because why choose if everything is possible?

If I've failed to convince you with all these arguments, I suggest you try stand up paddle as soon as possible. And who knows, you might become as addicted as me...

I first got into stand-up paddling 10 years ago and ever since I have been lucky enough to do it every day at racing speed on flat water or in the waves in Hendaye right next to my office with Itiwit equipment.

All in all, I am a lucky man, and I remind myself every time I go on the water...
