Choosing the right gear for summer canoeing and kayaking

For canoeing and kayaking in the summer choosing the right gear is easy: a buoyancy vest, an anti-UV top, and a swimsuit are all you really need.

But you can also get a sleeveless neoprene wetsuit and booties to protect yourself in the water.

Choosing the right gear for winter or mid-season canoeing and kayaking

In mid-season it's impossible to canoe or kayak in just a swimsuit. You need some basic equipment in case if you fall in the water. You can be easily exposed to the cold, wind and rain.

So in addition to a buoyancy aid, you'll need clothing that stays warm even when wet, such as a neoprene wetsuit and a thermal top. The properties of neoprene will retain your body heat.

In winter, also get a waterproof wind-breaker with a hood, which will protect from both rain and wind. The hood will also protect your head without obstructing your vision.

You should also have some neoprene booties that are resistant to abrasion and provide thermal comfort.
